My Weekend

What are you doing on this cold, Valentine’s Day weekend?

For those of you who know me, you know I’m a HUGE fan of youth sports. My kids have been on more soccer, basketball, baseball, football, track, lacrosse, cross country teams than I can count. I buy into it 100%. (I’m even that crazy over the top enthusiastic team manager who you dread getting emails from.)

However, I might be pushed over the edge this weekend. ME. She who drives her child to New Jersey for a “friendly” scrimmage. ME. She who happily spends all her weekends driving from venue to venue with a trunk full of snacks, water and equipment and a backseat filled with various kids.

It starts on Saturday night. Valentine’s Day. Justin has an 8:30 p.m. basketball game. Really?!  I know I’m part of an old married couple but how do the schedulers know that?

Then, Sunday morning. You’ll be lying in your cozy bed and listening to the cold wind blow your window screens and I’ll be on my way to Warrington, VA, 1.5 hours from my warm bed, for a 9:00 a.m. soccer game in 5 degree weather (-8 with the wind chill)!!

I’m all in but come on. Do you think our parents would have done this? NOT! If I couldn’t walk there, I couldn’t play. Pretty simple.

Now don’t get me wrong, I won’t put my foot down and stop taking my kids. What kind of sport parent would I BE if I wasn’t gung-ho? I’m being bold and complaining to you guys but do you think I’m going to take a stand and boycott or say enough is enough? Of course not.

Nope, I’m going to make my Valentine’s Day plans on Friday night. No big deal. Then on Sunday, I’ll plan to have Hannah there an hour before the game with every single Under Armor shirt we own in our house on her body. We’ll drive in the cold, windy darkness and I’ll find my tribe of fellow crazies with their hand warmers, full length coats, hot coffees, heated seat cushions and guess what?

We’ll probably actually enjoy ourselves…

Happy Valentine’s Day! Go Bull Dogs, Go Rush!
