Snow Day!

Yesterday I enjoyed a good old-fashioned snow day with my boy. This might seem like no big deal to you, however, with Justin going off to college in seven short months, any time I can spend being a mom of a kid is awesome.

It was a usual day. He slept in until noon while I shoveled the drive, make homemade soup, “blizzard cake” and got out the snow pants.

Lots of food was eaten, video games were played, books were read.

He said we’d go sledding later. I was really counting on it. When they’re ready to leave you need to suck the life out of the last moments.

I got the nod around 3:30. Let’s go.

Out to the back yard to make our sled runs. When he was younger, we’d be out there for hours. I remember I would think about all the things that needed to get done in the house, but he would insist we stay out there even when we were bright red and couldn’t feel our faces and fingers anymore. Why didn’t I just enjoy the moment more?

This was my chance to get it right. We made three runs. Country road, Fast Track and the In-between. Our fingers were cold, our dog was out of control and we had some good rides. Just like always. It was fun, but not quite as fun as usual. We stayed out for about a half hour because we both had things to do inside.

I think he understands how I feel and he went sledding just for my benefit – any maybe his? I couldn’t be happier about it.

God I’m going to miss him.
