My last kid is a senior and I have basically given up. Actually I have. I used to pride myself on being somewhat of a super mom in my chosen lane – not a “PTA mom” or “cut the crust off a sandwich mom” but an “I’ll volunteer to lead this” mom. I’ve been a coach, a committee leader and the team manager for just about every school and club team at some point.
Now, I’m organizing my very last task and I can barely pull it together. Baseball Senior Day. Quite frankly, I don’t feel like it. I’m sure it’s my defense mechanism kicking in, like when your HS senior lashes out and soils the nest before he leaves.
Case in point. Take a look at this banner. Do you see anything off in this picture?
Obviously, someone wasn’t there during picture day. A year ago, this would be a calamity, a red alert. He MUST be in the picture. He’s a SENIOR! Stop the presses, we need another pic! Now, it makes me giggle. (Luckily, the mom of this boy is giggling too.) I even forgot to order the celebration cake – what self-proclaimed coordinator of a school function forgets the fucking cake??
I think at the end of this long journey getting my kids from Kindergarten through 12th grade, I finally realize what’s important. My kids made it out of school relatively happy, reasonably ready for their next challenge and if it wasn’t a perfect ride, who cares. I’m done!

Gulp. I’m not crying. You’re crying. Oh wait, I’m not crying, I’m laughing. Who knows. Nice work mom. Nice work.

Same here! Except mine still has to wrap up 8th grade and finish 4 years of HS! (Sorry, Eli! Mama’s tired!)
