My “ist” is leaving

I’m driving my first born to college on Friday. This Friday. Three days from now. For the past several weeks, many blog ideas have come to mind but I’ve read so many about this subject that I can’t compete. (“Top 10 things I’ll miss the most”. Yawn. “I cried at a lemonade stand”. Sappy)

However, I got the topic last night talking to my old friend Deena (who provided us with our first meal after she was born, like two weeks ago). I was explaining that Hannah leaving would change the household.

“She’s the loudest, the messiest, the bossiest, the funniest.”

Deena said, she’s your “ist”. She’s right. Hannah is our families “ist”.  She breathes the most air, says the most words, is the most demanding and entertaining.

I know the “ist” well because when I was growing up, I was the “ist” of my family. Every family has an “ist” for better or worse and now we will experience life without one.

What will I do when I have no one to annoy me? Or challenge me?  Or make me laugh? My son and husband are wonderful people but they would agree they aren’t “ist’s”.

When two “ists” live together, it can be explosive but entertaining. Never a dull moment. Sigh…

Hannah, you will be MIST.

Kristen, you nailed it. That is Hannah! The trip to take your first (or only) to college is a monumental one. Saver it. It is one of a new set of firsts that define a different time for families. Hard and beautiful at the same time. You are such a great Mom, Hannah and Justin are lucky to have a foundation so strong to grow from.
