Summer’s A Bummer for Working Mother

It’s the first week of summer and I’ve already got the summertime blues. I remember my favorite things about summer: the ice cream man, halter tops, lazy days at the pool…

Well not anymore! Summer isn’t the same as a working mom. I’m not one to complain about working because I love what I do, however, summer’s a bummer. Who’s with me on this??!!

I’m not really whining about having to leave the house when all are snuggled in their beds or not being at the pool with my book during the day (even though I really want to). I’m primarily whining because its 10 weeks of what-am-I-going-to-do-with-my-kids-and-now-that-they-have-plans-how-the-hell-are-they-going-to-get-there-and-back??

Camp starts at 9:00 and ends at 4:00, lifeguard shifts for my working daughter start at 10:00 and end at 3:00. HS soccer scrimmages at 4:30. Not convenient! Afternoon play dates. Huge problem…

Every day is a new adventure in planning and organizing and a bunch load of fun when I walk in the door at the end of the day to see a shit-pile mess everywhere. Bitter? YES!

So, to help us, I’ve decided to create a “Working Moms Summer Fun Night” list like any respectable working mother’s magazine would ask us to do to make us feel better. Here goes!

  • Read a juicy trashy novel
  • Plan a Girls nights out
  • Enjoy a “Lay on the couch and do nothing” night
  • Organize a “Make your own Goddamn dinner” night
  • Participate in a “Fuck This” night. I’m pale, stressed and annoyed and I’m going straight to bed.

Those last ones are making me feel better already…

Maybe not as good as my teenage years of “long hot shower at the pool during adult swim with Apple Pectin shampoo good” but it will do…

P.S. THANK YOU to all of the moms who help drive my kids around all summer. See you in the fall!
